HIV Uninsured Care Program

WHAT IS ADAP?

ADAP Plus (AIDS Drug Assistance Program) provides medical care for people with HIV. If you are HIV positive, you need to know about ADAP. It is a program that helps HIV positive people get medications, medical care and home care that they need - and it's free.

ADAP pays for care for HIV positive people who can't get Medicaid, or who are waiting for Medicaid approval. If you have limited health insurance, ADAP might help fill the gaps in your coverage. Some common questions are:

QUESTION 1: Who is Eligible?

Eligibility for ADAP means you must meet the following criteria. You must be:

  • (1) HIV positive,
  • (2) live in New York State,
  • (3) meet income guidelines,
  • (4) have little of no health insurance OR have good health insurance but cannot afford to pay to keep it.
  • (5) In some instances teenagers who can't use their parents' money or insurance ARE eligible for ADAP Plus.

QUESTION 2: Can Anyone Join?   You can't enroll in ADAP if you make more than $44,000 a year as an individual and you can't have more than $25,000 in liquid assets (such as savings).

QUESTION 3: What services are covered?

  • (1) ADAP - pays for medications to treat HIV and associated infections & illnesses.
  • (2) Primary Care - pays for medical exams, disease monitoring, dental & eye care, women's health and most other outpatient services.
  • (3) Home Care - pays for home health aides, skilled nursing, homemakers and medical equipment.
  • (4) Health Insurance Continuation - pays to keep your health insurance if you lose your job or if you cannot afford to pay for your insurance.

QUESTION 4: How Do I Enroll?

You can get an application and help by trained professionals at the MOCHA Project. One application form is needed for all four prorams. A doctor must fill out a Medical Application to confirm your HIV status. You must provide proof of NYS residency, income and assets. Additional forms are needed to get Home Care services or health insurance continuation. Either stop by or call the MOCHA Project at (716) 852-1142 and speak to the ADAP Project Coordinator.
